1897 Paris premiere of Ernest Chausson’s Poème for violin and orchestra with Eugene Ysaÿe as soloist; the composer was overcome by the sustained applause, something he had not previously experienced in his career.

1905 Eugène Bozza – French composer and violinist (d.1991); one of the most prolific composers of chamber music for wind instruments.

1922 Elmer Bernstein – American composer and conductor (d.2004); wrote music for hundreds of film and TV productions, including The Magnificent Seven, The Ten Commandments, The Great Escape, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

1964 premiere of the Sondheim musical Anyone Can Whistle on Broadway, running for only 9 performances; nevertheless, Columbia Records executive Goddard Lieberson made an original cast recording that became a best-seller.

1977 first performance of Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ in Royan, France, with soprano soloist Stefania Woytowicz and the Southwest German Radio Orchestra conducted by Ernest Bour.

1989 Andreas Ottensamer – Austrian clarinetist (29 years old); principal clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic; his CD Brahms: The Hungarian Connection for Mercury Classics/Deutsche Grammophon was a WCLV Choice CD in June 2015; accompanied Tori Amos on her 2011 album Night of Hunters.
