1782 John Field – Irish pianist, composer and teacher (d.1837); very highly regarded by his contemporaries and his playing and compositions influenced many composers, including Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, and Liszt; best known for originating the piano nocturne, a form later made famous by Chopin.

1791 Franz Xaver Mozart – Austrian composer and pianist, the sixth child and youngest surviving son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (d. 1844); Franz Xaver received excellent training from Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Antonio Salieri, among others; he enjoyed moderate success as a teacher and a performer, but he was introverted and given to self-deprecation, constantly underrating his talent and fearing comparison with his father’s genius.

1874 Serge Koussevitzky – Russian-born American double-bass player, conductor and new music patron (d.1951); permanent conductor of the Boston Symphony, 1924-1949; for the Orchestra's 50th anniversary, commissioned Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, Copland's Ode, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 4, Paul Hindemith's Concert Music for Strings & Brass, and Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, as well as works by Albert Roussel and Howard Hanson            .

1876 Ernest Schelling – American pianist, composer and conductor (d.1939); the first conductor of the Young People's Concerts of the New York Philharmonic

1882 premiere of Richard Wagner's last completed music drama, Parsifal, at the Bayreuth Festival, which maintained a monopoly on Parsifal productions until 1903, when the opera was performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

1958 Angela Hewitt – British/Canadian pianist (60 years old); 3rd Prize at the 1979 Cleveland International Piano Competition; best known for her Bach interpretations.
