Independence Day!
1623 death of William Byrd – English composer (aged c. 80, the exact date of his birth is not known); his output of about 470 compositions justifies his reputation as one of the great masters of European Renaissance music.
1694 Louis Claude Daquin – French composer and organist (d.1772); at the age of eight, he conducted his own choral work Beatus Vir.
1826 Stephen Foster – American songwriter (d.1864); known as the ‘Father of American music’; among the best known of his more than 200 songs are Oh! Susanna, Camptown Races, Old Folks at Home, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair and Beautiful Dreamer.
1831 The patriotic hymn America (to the tune of the British song God Save the King [or Queen] with new words supplied by Samuel Francis Smith is sung by a children's choir at a Fourth of July service at the Park Street Church in Boston.
1903 Flor Peeters – Belgian composer, organist and teacher (d.1986); enjoyed great renown, giving concerts and liturgical master-classes all over the world.
1909 Alec Templeton – Welsh-born American composer, pianist and satirist (d.1963); active in radio and TV in the '40s & '50s even though blind from birth; his compositions include Scarlatti Stoops to Conga and Bach Goes to Town.
1923 first performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams's English Folk Song Suite in London, by the band of the Royal Military School of Music.
