Almanac

May 7

1824 first performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 ‘Choral’ in the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna; in 2002, the original score of the symphony, kept in the Berlin Library, was added to the United Nations World Heritage List, the first musical score so honored.

1833 Johannes Brahms – German composer and pianist (d.1897); his contribution and craftsmanship have been admired by figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Sir Edward Elgar; the diligent, highly constructed nature of Brahms's works was a starting point and an inspiration for a generation of composers.

1840 Peter Tchaikovsky – Russian composer (d.1893); he forged a personal but unmistakably Russian style in symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, chamber music, and became the first full-time professional Russian composer.

1888 premiere of Eduard Lalo’s Le Roi d'Ys (The King of Ys) at the Opéra Comique in Paris; based on an old Breton legend of the drowned city of Ys.
