1739 premiere of Rameau's Les fêtes d'Hébé, ou Les talents lyriques (The Festivities of Hebe, or The Lyric Talents) in Paris; the composer's second opera-ballet was an immediate success and became one of his most popular operas.

1888 May Aufderheide - American composer (d.1972); the popularity of her first published rag Dusty convinced her father, an Indianapolis loan broker, to enter the music business forming the firm J. H. Aufderheide Music Publisher.

1892 premiere of Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci in Milan at Teatro dal Verme, with Arturo Toscanini conducting; received mixed critical reviews but was instantly successful with the public.

1939 Heinz Holliger - Swiss oboist, composer and conductor (77 years old); Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Frank Martin, Hans Werner Henze, Witold Lutoslawski and Karlheinz Stockhausen all wrote works for him.

2000 first performance of Bruce Adolphe's Tyrannosaurus Sue 'A Cretaceous Concerto' with the Chicago Chamber Players at the Field Museum in Chicago; one of many pieces by Adolphe for younger listeners.
