Nov. 9, 2015 (Cleveland, OH) – In the last year, Cleveland has found itself—along with cities like Ferguson, Baltimore and New York—at the forefront of national soul-searching on the relationships between police and the communities they serve. As the city of Cleveland works to transform its policing policy and practice, ideastream presents Our Land, an ongoing multiple media exploration of what Clevelanders think about community policing. The series is featured on 90.3 WCPN and is available anytime at wcpn.org/ourland.
The series presents expanded answers and perspectives from Clevelanders, always prompted by the same questions: “What should community policing look like?” and “How far are we from it?”
Our Land, produced by Tony Ganzer, WCPN’s afternoon Host/Producer, said the objective of this in-depth series is to give Clevelanders the time to present their opinions with nuance and candor and to move beyond the usual soundbites.
“For many, community policing is broader than just interactions between police and civilians,” Ganzer explains in the Our Land Special: A Conversation About Community Policing, which is available online now. “It includes the broader idea of feeling safe and secure in neighborhoods.”
So far, the series has included perspectives from residents of the Cudell neighborhood and a Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority community, high school students, religious leaders, Cleveland’s police commander in charge of community policing and more.
