1870 Florent Schmitt – French composer (d.1958); known today for La tragédie de Salome and Psalm 47.

1913 Vivian Fine – American composer (d.2000); her chamber opera The Women in the Garden (1978) uses the writings of Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Isadora Duncan and Gertrude Stein to fashion conversations among the four women and a tenor representing the various men in their lives.

1918 premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s theatrical work The Soldier's Tale for narrator and 7 instruments, in Lausanne at the Théatre Municipal with Ernest Ansermet conducting; the libretto tells the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain.
