1777 premiere of Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera Armide at the Académie Royale in Paris; the composer's own favorite among his works and warmly praised by Berlioz in his Memoirs.

1920 Alexander Arutiunian – Soviet and Armenian composer and pianist (d.2012); his Trumpet Concerto (1950) is his best-known work.

1928 Robert Helps – American composer, pianist and teacher (d.2001); one of the most distinguished pupils of piano teacher Abby Whiteside; studied composition with Roger Sessions, who exerted a strong influence on his career, and whose music he often performed and recorded.

1973 Ingrid Fliter – Argentine pianist (51 years old); in 2006, recipient of the Gilmore Artist Award, the first woman to win it.
