1561 Jacopo Peri – Italian composer and singer of the transitional period between the Renaissance and Baroque (d.1633); often called the inventor of opera, having written the first work to be called an opera today, Dafne (around 1597), and the first opera to have survived to the present day, Euridice (1600).
1827 Josef Strauss – Austrian composer (d.1870); son of Johann Strauss Sr. and brother of Johann Strauss Jr and Eduard Strauss; worked for the city of Vienna as an engineer, designing a horse-drawn revolving brush street-sweeping vehicle; published two textbooks on mathematical subjects; he was also an artist, painter, poet, dramatist, singer and inventor.
1974 Maxim Vengerov – Russian violinist, violist, and conductor (50 years old); since 2005, Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London; subject of the documentary Living the Dream (2007), directed by the American actor, Ken Howard.
