1651 Domenico Gabrielli – Italian composer and virtuoso cellist (d.1696); born in Bologna, apparently not related to the Venetian Gabrieli’s.

1688 Johann Friedrich Fasch – German composer (d.1758); considered an important link between the Baroque and Classical periods.

1902 first performance of Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavan for a Dead Princess, or more accurately: Pavan for a Princess of the Past) in Paris, by Ravel's friend Ricardo Viñes; the work was written in 1899, published in 1900; an orchestrated version followed in 1910.

1915 premiere of Manuel de Falla's ballet El amor brujo (Love, the Magician) in Madrid; distinctively Andalusian in character, with songs in Gypsy dialect; most famous excerpt is the Ritual Fire Dance.

1918 first performances of Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 3 and Visions fugitives Op 22 in St. Petersburg (at the time, named Petrograd) by the composer.

1926 premiere of Douglas Moore’s opera The Pageant of P.T. Barnum by the Cleveland Orchestra, Nikolai Sokoloff conducting.

1927 first performance of Frederick Converse’s orchestral fantasy Flivver Ten Million (celebrating the 10-millionth Ford automobile produced), by the Boston Symphony, Serge Koussevitzky conducting.
