Almanac

October 19

1845 premiere of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser [full title: Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg (Tannhäuser and the Singers' Contest at Wartburg Castle)] at the Royal Theater in Dresden; story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's mature work; this ‘Dresden version’ was extensively revised in 1861 for a production is Paris.

1894 first performance of George W. Chadwick's Symphony No. 3 by the Boston Symphony, Emil Paur conducting; won first prize in the second annual composition competition of the National Conservatory of Music; the competition chair—and Director of the Conservatory at the time—was Antonín Dvorák.

1901 first performances of Sir Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches Nos. 1 & 2 by the Liverpool Orchestral Society conducted by the composer; in the US, the trio section Land of Hope and Glory of March No. 1 is sometimes known simply as Pomp and Circumstance or as The Graduation March and is played as the processional tune at virtually all high school and some college graduations; first played at such a ceremony on June 28, 1905 at Yale University.

1903 Vittorio Giannini – American composer (d.1966); neo-romantic composer of operas, songs, symphonies, and band works.

1905 first performance the revised final version of Jean Sibelius's Violin Concerto in Berlin, conducted by Richard Strauss and with soloist Karl Halir; an earlier version had premiered a year earlier; it’s the only concerto Sibelius ever wrote.

1916 Karl-Birger Blomdahl – Swedish composer and conductor (d.1968); trained as a biochemist, but turned to music and through his experimental compositions became one of the big names in Swedish modernism.

1922 first performance of Maurice Ravel's orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in Paris; conducted by Serge Koussevitzky who had commissioned the arrangement.

1943 Robin Holloway – English composer, academic and writer (75  years old); according to fellow composer David Matthews, his "individual style has been formed by a productive conflict between Romanticism and Modernism."

1967 public premiere of George Gershwin's Lullaby for string quartet (composed c.1919-20), at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, by the Juilliard String Quartet; during his lifetime, Gershwin would occasionally arrange impromptu performances of this piece at parties if enough string players were in attendance.
