October 17

1831 first performance of Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Munich with the composer as soloist; composed during travel in Italy around the same time as his Italian Symphony.

1892 Herbert Howells – English composer, organist, and teacher (d.1983); most famous for his large output of Anglican Church music.

1940 Stephen Kovacevich – American pianist, conductor (77 years old); before 1975 was known as Stephen Bishop and then Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich.

1941 first performance of William Schuman’s Symphony No. 3 by the Boston Symphony conducted by Serge Koussevitzky (who had commissioned it).

1946 Viktor Tretiakov – Russian violinist, conductor (72 years old); won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966.

1957 first performance of Paul Creston’s Toccata for Orchestra, commissioned by The Cleveland Orchestra for its 40th anniversary.

1977 Nicole Cabell – American soprano (41 years old); winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 2005; she is of African American, Korean and Caucasian ancestry, and was brought up in the beach town of Ventura, California.
