1779 premiere of Christoph Willibald Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride (Iphigenia in Tauris) by the Paris Opéra at the Salle du Palais-Royal; based on the Euripides play.           

1830 Karl Goldmark - Hungarian composer (d.1915); to make ends meet, pursued a side career as a music journalist, and found middle ground between the promoters of Brahms and Wagner.

1887 premiere of Chabrier's comedy Le roi malgre lui (The King in Spite of Himself), in Paris at the Opéra-Comique; revived only occasionally but greatly admired by composers including d'Indy, Ravel and Stravinsky.

1897 first performance of the tone poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice in Paris with composer Paul Dukas conducting; based on Goethe's 1797 ballad of the same name; immortalized when Mickey Mouse portrayed the title character in the Disney film Fantasia (1940).

1901 Henri Sauguet - French composer (d.1989); best known for his ballets, of which he wrote more than 20.

1902 Meredith Willson - American composer, songwriter, conductor and playwright (d.1984); best known for writing the book, music and lyrics for the hit Broadway musical The Music Man (1957); a flute and piccolo player, he was a member of John Philip Sousa's band (1921–1923), and the New York Philharmonic under Arturo Toscanini (1924–1929). He also wrote three autobiographical books, And There I Stood with My Piccolo, Eggs I Have Laid, and But He Doesn't Know the Territory.

1917 premiere of Satie's ballet Parade in Paris by the Ballets Russes with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet.

1944 Justus Frantz - German pianist, conductor and TV personality (72 years old).
