1846 American premiere of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 ‘Choral’ by the New York Philharmonic Society at New York's Castle Garden, George Loder, Jr. conducting; the Society tried unsuccessfully to invite Mendelssohn to attend this festival performance; the work had premiered 22 years earlier in Vienna.

1937 first performance of John J. Becker's Symphony No. 3 'Symphonia Brevis' at the Saint Paul Auditorium by the Twin Cities Civic (Federal Music Project, Minnesota) Orchestra, with the composer conducting.

1966 Emma Johnson – English clarinetist (53 years old); awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to music in 1996.
