Bastille Day

1901 Gerald Finzi – English composer (d.1956); best known as a writer of songs, many with texts by Thomas Hardy, but also wrote in other genres; notable for his clarinet and cello concertos; according to his website, Finzi’s masterpiece is Intimations of Immortality (1950) for tenor, chorus and orchestra.

1949 first performance of Britten’s Spring Symphony at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, dedicated to Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
