A new series of environmental events focused on clearing invasive plants will begin this summer in the Buffalo area. The Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and Labatt USA are hosting several cleanup events centered around Times Beach on Lake Erie and Seneca Bluffs on the Buffalo River. The river empties into the eastern end of Lake Erie.In addition to clearing debris, volunteers will help remove invasives, Riverkeeper Executive Director Jill Jedlicka says.“This kind of takes it up a level, usually when we do the Earth Day clean ups and the spring shoreline sweeps that is strictly picking up trash debris," she said. "These are more strategic in that they actually involve pulling of invasive plant species or planting native species in addition to picking up debris."Labatts donated $25,000 for the cleanup efforts.“With the help of the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, we were able to uncover a need for more volunteers to help ... clean up invasive species, help restore natural habitats," said Lisa Texido, a brand manager for Labatt USA. "So we’re really excited about the opportunity."The cleanup starts July 22 and runs through October. To register, visit the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper’s website. Copyright 2017 Great Lakes Today.
