Victims of domestic violence will have more protections under a bill passed by the Ohio House. The measure known as Aisha’s Law would increase police interventions and toughen penalties for murder by an intimate partner.
The law is named in memory of Shaker Heights school teacher, Aisha Fraser, who was murdered by her ex-husband in 2018. The ex-husband, former judge and lawmaker, Lance Mason is serving a life sentence.
The Ohio Redistricting Commission will miss Sunday’s deadline to approve a new congressional district map for the state. That means the work moves back to state lawmakers who will have until the end of November to pass a map. Ohio will lose one seat in Congress as a result or redistricting—moving from 16 representatives to 15.
The commission met yesterday to look over map proposals: one submitted by Democrats and one submitted by citizens. Republicans did not offer a map proposal. This is the first redistricting to take place under reforms passed by voters to make the outcome fair and less gerrymandered.
A co-ed roller derby team, the Cleveland Guardians, is challenging the city’s Major League Baseball franchise’s decision to take the same name next season. The roller-derby team, based in Parma, filed suit in United States District Court in Cleveland to stop the baseball team from using the Guardians nickname. In filing the suit, the roller-derby team suggested a simple Google search would have turned up the team’s use of the name before the baseball team decided on the same nickname.
Cleveland travelers will have more West Coast flight options in 2022. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport announced yesterday that beginning in June, Alaska Air will offer a non-stop flight to Seattle. The city has been without non-stop service to Seattle since 2014 when United Airlines had a hub out of Hopkins. Business travel is expected to increase in 2022
