A COVID-19 Vaccine Looks Promising, But Cases Continue To Surge Across The Country And Ohio

For the last week, most of America has been glued to their phones, TV screens, or computers viewing the results from the elections, and rightly so.

The race has been a heated one, and the implications of a win from either side were clear.

But something else happened in the past 7 days that was being overshadowed by the news of a Biden-Harris presidency.

New records in COVID-19 cases were being recorded all across the country. Monday, we reached the grim milestone that more than 10 MILLION people in this country have been infected by the coronavirus. Globally, the number is more than 50 million.

In the United States, cases are increasing by more than 100,000 per day. The death toll sits over 238,000. Here in Ohio, a new record of 5,549 cases in one day was set this past Saturday. A month ago, the daily average in Ohio was only about 1800 cases.

Positivity rates are on the rise as well; Saturday, the rate of positive tests was 10.1%. Again, well above the average of a month ago.

All of this comes as we make our way into the winter flu season, aware that things may grow much worse.

What could be one small bright spot on the horizon is news on Monday that early vaccine trials from drug maker Pfizer are promising; about a 90% prevention rate against COVID-19. But the company and several world leaders warn that the Pfizer vaccine is not a quick route out of lockdown.

Today on The Sound of Ideas we get a coronavirus update from a doctor at University Hospitals.

Later in the program, we’ll learn about a new project from ideastream that takes us inside the Woodhill Homes community.

We’ll share with you the first installment of “ Inside the Bricks: Woodhill Homes,” an in-depth series about the public housing neighborhood on Cleveland’s East Side, that opened in 1940, that was last overhauled 25 years ago, and may finally be getting a complete rebuild in the next few years.
ideastream producer Justin Glanville will join us to talk about the project.
