Conservative Tom Hach and Liberal Ted Wetzel have different political beliefs. But since January, they've been talking online, once a month, trying to to find common ground - and to address the division in our country.

They had already been doing what ideastream and StoryCorps are convening people to do through our One Small Step project, to talk to people who have differing beliefs and understand their humanity, to come away with a level of respect and not demonization.

Hack and Wetzel signed on to the One Small Step project to dig even deeper into their relationship. Here's a small part of their 40 minute conversation.

This year, ideastream and five other NPR member stations are participanting in the StoryCorps project. This month, we'll air excerpts from some of the conversations that have happened so far. This conversation was facilitated and produced by Coordinating Producer Rachel Rood. There's still time to sign up for the project  by filling out a questionnaire online.

StoryCorps' One Small Step is made possible in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Rachel is the supervising producer for Ideastream Public Media’s morning public affairs show, the “Sound of Ideas.”
