Encore: Know the Risks of Opioid Addiction

Ohioans are dying by the thousands as the state grapples with a deadly drug epidemic.  The deaths are driven largely by the use of heroin and powerful synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

In Cuyahoga County, the numbers are grim.  At least 41 deaths attributed to heroin, fentanyl or a combination in April. Further toxicology tests may actually boost that number.  Last year, the county medical examiner recorded 666 drug overdose deaths, a record--the bulk of those opioid related.   But already the medical examiner says the deaths in 2017 are on track to eclipse 2016's grim numbers.  Contributing to this epidemic is the use of prescription pain killers.

That's why Ideastream and the other media outlets in town joined together in April with government, law enforcement, medical agencies and businesses to form a community wide education and awareness campaign called "Know the Risks".  We had a very important discussion in April that we think is important enough to broadcast again.
