A Plus: Wilson Walk-a-thon

READ THE SCRIPT:

We’re awarding this week’s A Plus to students getting active to help raise money for their PTO. Every year, Wilson Elementary School in Cincinnati holds the Wilson Walk-a-thon.

Students collect sponsorships and hit the field, taking laps around the school with teachers and parents. Recently, some have been getting more creative with their efforts, setting up car washes and holding craft sales.

We learned of the event from Carly, who took her own approach with friend Lea, selling chocolate chip cookies and lemonade. They also made bracelets, necklaces, and rings. She said “Some people did a pay-it-forward donation where they paid for the next person’s purchase. There was someone whose wallet was left at home so we gave her a necklace for free because we had enough money to do so from the donation. We were so happy to contribute to our school’s fundraiser!”

2019’s theme was “The Sky’s the Limit” in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, with Ohio’s own Neil Armstrong taking that first step!

There were lunar-related incentives for reaching goals, one being a chance to tape their assistant principal to the Apollo 11 launch pad. All the efforts paid off and Assistant Principal Lyons stepped onto the pad, while students took turns taping him to it.

The funds raised will be used for school programs, teacher grants and much needed additional parking.

Well done, we’re happy to award you this week’s NewDepth A Plus.
