Last year more than one million Americans filed for bankruptcy and thanks to the recession that number is likely to rise this year. Bankruptcy is supposed to give consumers a fresh start but new research shows that some people find themselves in worse financial shape after filing. Moreover, a 2005 law made it more difficult for people to file for bankruptcy. How should consumers navigate this complex system?
