One year ago today, Governor Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic. On the day of the announcement, March 9, 2020, DeWine also confirmed the first cases of COVID-19 in the state, three residents living in Cuyahoga County. In that press conference, he emphasized that from then on, our entire lives would change as we knew them.

On The Sound of Ideas, we'll reflect on what that day was like when our lives in Ohio began to shut down, and how much things have changed since then. For many employees of ideastream, that was the first day we began to work from home, and most of us, even some on the Sound of Ideas team, haven't been to the office for exactly one year.

Beyond our conversation today, for the next few weeks you'll hear ideastream reporters digging into other important moments since the year of COVID began. They'll recall when businesses began shutting down, or when Governor DeWine cancelled K-12 school, for what we thought would be three weeks.

Joining host Rick Jackson to reflect on today's historic moment is Marlene Harris-Taylor, Managing Producer of our Health unit.

Then, we look to the future, and a new option from University Hospitals aimed at reducing inequities for the Medicaid population.

We'll close by featuring an interview with the late Michael Stanley, who passed away during the weekend.
