"I Wish My Teacher Knew": Prompt Opens Communication for Teachers, Students

Teaching isn't just recitation of fact and fill-in-the-blank tests. It involves creating a community in the classroom that serves each student. Kyle Schwartz, a third-grade teacher in Denver and now author, says the way to develop that community is to create strong relationships with students. But first, you need to know where they're coming from. And for that, there is one fill in the blank exercise that has been a revelation. When kids are asked to finish this sentence, "I wish my teacher knew," the answers can be humorous, heartbreaking and incredibly revelatory.
