France, U.S. Agree on Holocaust Compensation

Thousands of Holocaust survivors and their families will receive compensation from a joint French and American fund. To compensate someone is to award them, typically with money, as a way to make amends for some sort of loss, injury, or suffering.

During World War II, French rail company SNCF transported about 76,000 Jews to Nazi concentration camps. The company has apologized for the role it played during the war, though it disputes how much responsibility it bears for the events.

France has previously paid out some six billion dollars in compensation, but this money is allocated to Americans, Israelis, and others living outside of France.
