A suspect in an armed carjacking in Cleveland’s Kinsman neighborhood who was wounded in a shootout with police yesterday remains hospitalized. Police Chief Calvin Williams says he’s expected to survive. Police investigating the carjacking of a black Ford Taurus spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it. Chief Williams said the suspect fled on foot and began firing at the officers who pursued him. Four of the officers were with the Cleveland Police Department; one was with the Regional Transit Authority.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris used her keynote address before Cuyahoga County Democrats to call for universal background checks in the wake of the synagogue shooting near San Diego. She said, as president, she’d use her executive power to expand gun restrictions if Congress didn’t. Harris’ attendance at the County Democrats' annual dinner in downtown Cleveland on Sunday was her first appearance in Ohio as a candidate.
House Speaker Larry Householder says he does not think a new funding formula for Ohio's schools will be incorporated into the upcoming two-year state budget. He said the bill by Reps. Bob Cupp (R – Lima) and John Patterson (D – Jefferson) "needs a lot more work." He said their current proposal would compound existing imbalances between poor and wealthy districts.
The Houston Astros defeated the Indians, 4-1. Carlos Carrasco had pitched six innings of one-hit ball at Minute Maid Park before he gave up four runs in the seventh. Robinson Chirinos hit a tiebreaking three-run homer to lift the Astros over the Indians.
