Officers for the Cleveland Division of Police and the Regional Transit Authority shot a suspect in the Kinsman area during a car and foot chase Sunday afternoon.
Officers returned fire after a 40-year-old man suspected of a carjacking allegedly opened fire.
The suspect was taken to University Hospitals and police withheld his name.
Cleveland chief of police Calvin Williams spoke to reporters at the scene Sunday shortly after the incident.
“All the officers involved, all the citizens that were victimized by this person are all ok. Nobody’s hurt,” said Williams. “And the suspect we believe is out of surgery, somewhere between surgery and recovery, serious condition but expected to survive.”
The incident started with a report of a carjacking shortly after 9 a.m. The same suspect is believed to have threatened people at a laundromat on Fleet Avenue shortly after.
Officers spotted the stolen car and, after a vehicle pursuit and foot chase, the suspect allegedly opened fire on police.
Williams said the four CDP officers and one RTA officer involved in the shooting are on paid leave and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s office is investigating.
