Summit County Health Officials Recommend Schools Stop Sports and Scale Back In-Person Classes

Summit County Public Health
Summit County Public Health (SCPH) has issued new recommendations to control the spread of the coronavirus.

The Summit County Public Health Departmentrecommends all K-12, collegiate, amateur, and club competitions and scrimmages pause, while advising that skills training and conditioning can continue with proper precautions (see the recommendation below).

Officials are also asking school administrators to consider dropping their “learning modality” by one level for older students to minimize risk. Under this shift, fully in-person classes would become a hybrid of in-person and remote allowing for more social distancing, and hybrid would become fully online learning.

The department says the recommendations are aimed to prevent hospital systems from becoming overwhelmed and keeping children in school. Last week, Summit County moved to the highest level of purple on the state’s COVID-19 alert map.

The department also recommends residents limit their activities to one a day — like work or school — and minimize all non-essential travel. Other recommendations include shopping online or utilizing curbside pickup for groceries and household items and using delivery, takeout or curbside pickup for restaurants. Health officials say residents should decrease in-person interactions outside of the household and limit attending gatherings of any size.
