Cleveland Mulls Lifting Moratorium on Pot Grow Sites

Cleveland city council on Monday discussed the possibility of lifting a city-wide moratorium on the cultivation of medical marijuana. 

The move comes as the state begins accepting cultivator license applications starting June 5 ^th.  Some council members expressed concern about zoning and where the grow sites would be located.  But Ward 8 councilman Mike Polensek sees an opportunity for the city and pointed to other municipalities in Northeast Ohio that are considering marijuana cultivation.

“We need to look at what they’re doing and take the same approach. We have a lot of old buildings that could be put back to productive use and put people to work and with all the security measures, security will not be an issue.”

The state has established rules mandating minimum security requirements and location restrictions for all marijuana growing sites. 

Last October, council voted to impose a one-year moratorium on cultivating, processing and selling marijuana.  Council is only considering lifting the moratorium on the growing of pot.
