WOW! I LIKE THAT NAME THAT OBAMA MADE UP FOR YOU GUYS – THE MARS GENERATION. IT SOUNDS FITTING, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE GOT QUITE A FEW LETTERS THIS WEEK THAT I THINK ARE JUST OUT OF THIS WORLD!

AVA FROM EVENING STREET ELEMENTARY WEIGHED IN ON OUR QUESTION LAST WEEK: WHO WOULD YOU NOMINATE FOR A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE? I THINK MY DAD SHOULD WIN THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS ABLE TO SPLIT UP A FIGHT. I BET HE COULD EVEN SPLIT UP WAR.

LAUREN FROM ELMHURST ELEMENTARY, SAYS HER MOM ALSO HELPS KEEP THE PEACE: THE PERSON WHO I WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE WOULD BE MY MOTHER, FOR A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. MY SAYING WOULD BE, "PEACE IN THE HOUSE." I'D LIKE TO NOMINATE HER BECAUSE SHE ALWAYS BREAKS UP THE "FIGHTS" OR ARGUMENTS BETWEEN ME AND MY BROTHER. ALSO, BECAUSE SHE'S A TEACHER, AND I KNOW SHE BREAKS UP A TON OF ARGUMENTS AMONG HER FIRST GRADERS. AND, I'M JUST CURIOUS RICK, WHO WOULD YOU NOMINATE PERSONALLY? GOOD QUESTION LAUREN – I’LL THINK ABOUT THAT AND PUT THE ANSWER ON THE NEWSDEPTH PAGE ONLINE….

LIAM FROM KENNSINGTON INTERMEDIATE EXPLAINS HIS VOTE IN LAST WEEK’S POLL ASKING IF PEOPLE SHOULD BE FORCED TO EVACUATE IN DANGEROUS WEATHER: I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES DURING DANGEROUS STORMS BECAUSE IF THEY STAY THERE IS A VERY LIKELY CHANCE THAT THEY COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED. AND IF THEY CHOOSE TO STAY AND THEN NEED A RESCUE, THE PEOPLE RESCUING THEM COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED TOO. I DON'T THINK THEY SHOULD STAY BECAUSE IT'S TOO BIG OF A RISK FOR BOTH THEM AND THE PEOPLE RESCUING THEM.

DEVIN FROM AYER ELEMENTARY TOOK VOTED THE OPPOSITE WAY: I THINK THAT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE EVACUATE FROM THEIR HOMES. I ALSO THINK THAT PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO STAY WITH THEIR PROPERTY. I DECIDED TO VOTE ON THAT PEOPLE CAN STAY HOME DURING A HURRICANE. I CHOSE THIS BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY REASONS SOMEONE MIGHT NOT EVACUATE THEIR HOMES, FROM THINKING IT CAN BE A SMALL STORM TO WANTING TO HELP.

AND…HERE’S A NEW ONE: WE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM BOSCUS AT PLEASANT RUN ELEMENTARY HI, I'M BOSCUS, MR. ANDERSON'S LIZARD, AND I SAW THE WHOLE SEGMENT FROM MY CAGE. I GOT TO SAY, YOU GOT A PRETTY NICE NEWS SHOW, AND I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD EVACUATE IF THERE IS A FLOOD OR, HURRICANE WARNING BECAUSE THEY ARE PUTTING THEMSELVES, AND THE RESCUERS IN DANGER, WHICH IS PRETTY SELF-CENTERED IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF. WELL, THAT WAS MY OPINION ON THURSDAY'S SEGMENT, THIS IS BOSCUS, SIGNING OFF.

[TRANSITION TO PHOTO] OH, AND THERE’S BOSCUS IN HIS CAGE. THAT MUST BE WHERE HE SAW THE SHOW FROM LAST WEEK. WE HEARD BOSCUS GOT A LITTLE HELP WRITING THAT E-MAIL FROM HIS FRIEND KEMA. THANKS BOSCUS, AND THANKS ALSO TO AVA, LAUREN, LIAM, AND DEVIN. WE HAD SOME GREAT LETTERS THIS WEEK!

BEFORE WE MOVE ON, I WANT TO GIVE A SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO GLENN BRUCE, WHO WROTE IN AFTER TAKING ISSUE WITH SOMETHING I SAID WHILE INTRODUCING THE KNOW OHIO SEGMENT LAST WEEK: EARLIER IN THE SHOW, WE TALKED ABOUT THE RESPECT WE TYPICALLY PAY TO OUR NATION’S FLAG – AND YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD THE TALE OF BETSY ROSS STITCHING TOGETHER THE OL’ GLORY WE SALUTE TODAY – BUT WHAT ABOUT OHIO’S STATE FLAG? GLENN POINTED OUT THAT THE TALE OF BETSY ROSS IS JUST THAT: A TALE. IN TRUTH, ROSS WAS ONE OF MANY FLAG-MAKERS IN PHILADELPHIA AT THE TIME, BUT THE ORIGINAL STAR SPANGLED BANNER WAS LIKELY SEWN BY A GROUP OF WOMEN LED BY MARY YOUNG PICKERSGILL. SHE’S NOT AS CELEBRATED AS BETSY ROSS, BUT SHE CERTAINLY HAS A PLACE IN HISTORY. THANKS FOR THE TIP, GLENN!
