Extreme Weather in Japan and India

The most recent in a string of powerful storms has hit Kyushu, the furthest south of the Japanese islands. It first hit Japan Sunday around Okinawa. Power was knocked out, but the storm lost strength there and was downgraded from a typhoon - which is the southern hemisphere word for a hurricane. At least 36 injuries were blamed on the storm with more expected on Tuesday, and three people were reported missing.

In India, a cyclone struck this week that caused millions of dollars in damage, forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes, and killed at least six people.

Mamed Cyclone 'Hudhud', this weather phenomenon - the same thing as a hurricane or a typhoon - uprooted trees and utility polls, and heavily damaged many buildings. At one point, scientists clocked it as moving at 127 miles per hour, with gusting winds of more than 155 miles per hour! The worst damage is along India's east coast, in the states of Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
