Is Socialism Really That Scary? Not According To "The Big Scary 'S' Word", Now Streaming at CIFF45

The Big Scary "S" Word

When you hear the word "socialism", what does your mind go?

Stalin? Mao? Government takeovers? Perhaps some sleepy history lesson from high school?

You wouldn't necessarily be wrong but you could also lump social security, the 40 hour work week, the abolitionist movement, and the founding of The Republican Party into that concept of 'socialism'.

That nuanced and often misunderstood term in the subject of a new documentary at the Cleveland International Film Festival.

It's appropriately called "The Big Scary 'S' Word" and it traces the path socialism has taken through the history of the United States, from Karl Marx writing letters to Abraham Lincoln, to employee owned businesses right here in Cleveland.

Yael Bridge, the director of the film joins us for today's program.

First up on today's show however, we once again turn to the increase of hate crimes and attacks on Asian Americans in recent months, and one glaring example showed a lack of help allies willing to jump in to try to stop the attack.

Two weeks weeks, a 65-year-old Filipino woman in New York was kicked to the ground. Her attacker continue to kick her as three men, including a security guard stood by and watched.

We'll discuss, in the face of racist and xenophobic attacks, what a bystander can and should do when intervening.

Our Multiple Media Producer Gabriel Kramer will be with us for that discussion, along with Cleveland State University Professor Stacey Litam.

Finally, we share with you another of ideastream's "Applause Performances", this month we hear from a trio of virtuosos from The Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
