The Ohio School Board is backing a proposal that would put into place a one-year emergency exemption from the state's new graduation requirements.  Those reqirements which were to go into effect with the Class of 2018--this year's juniors--scrap the Ohio Graduation Test for a battery of seven rigorous "end of course" tests.  Superintendents have been sounding the alarm that up to 30-percent of students--and more in some urban districts--were not on pace to graduate because students couldn't obtain the required scores on the tests.  Those end of course exams were in addition to passing high school classes.

Chad Aldis, VP for Ohio Policy and Advocacy, Thomas B. Fordham Institute
Jonathan Kuehnle, Principal, Shake Heights High School
Sen. Peggy Lehner, (R) District-6, Chair, Ohio Senate Education Committee
