If you've ever gotten something greasy or oily on your skin, you know it won't just come off with water. You need soap to break up the grime.
The same is true for birds who get dirty during oil spills. Their wings get gummed up, making it difficult for them to fly. On top of that, birds will try to clean themselves and end up eating the oil, which is bad for their digestion.
According to the International Bird Rescue, they need help from humans to suds up and rinse off the toxic oil. Wildlife rescue experts are trained to clean the birds and bring them back to health.
