Petting Zoo: It's Baby Reindeer Season!

What’s the difference between a caribou and a reindeer? Mainly location! In northern Europe and Asia the domesticated animals are called “reindeer.” In North America, where they roam the wild, we call them “caribou,” but sometimes when they are domesticated here we like to call them “reindeer” too!

Spring is the most common time for reindeer to give birth, which is why this Alaska farm is welcoming so many new calves. It only takes about an hour for the newbies to be walking around! But they stick close to mom to nurse for about six months, according to San Diego Zoo Kids.
