Petting Zoo: Rare Whale Spotted in Virginia

What a sight! North Atlantic right whales considered endangered, so spotting one is quite a treat!

The big guys can weigh up to 140,000 pounds, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Right whales feed on tiny organisms called zooplankton by opening up their mouths and swimming through large patches of them in the ocean. Then they use a special filter in their mouths to push out all the extra water they scooped up. The whales can eat between 2,200 and 5,500 pounds of zooplankton a day!
