A Plus: Lee Eaton Student Helps Baby Cousin With Cancer Through Rays for Raegan Fundraiser

Lee Eaton Student and Baby Cousin Raegan

READ THE SCRIPT:

This week’s NewsDepth A Plus goes to a student who supported a family member in need with the help of her school’s student council.

Summer Radecky is a fifth grader at Lee Eaton Elementary School in Nordonia. Her 19 month old baby cousin Raegan has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is a rare form of cancer that forms on the adrenal glands, which are small glands on top of your kidneys.  To help raise money for Raegan’s cancer treatments, Summer created a campaign called Rays for Raegan, and asked the student council to spread the word.

Students sold buttons, raffle baskets, stickers and even Rays for Reagan merchandise, like shirts, hoodies and water bottles. They wound up raising about 1,000 dollars to help Raegan and her family. Summer is continuing her Rays for Raegan campaign with a toy and blood drive with her Girl Scout Troop in May.

Summer says, “My favorite part of the fundraiser was how grateful I felt when the whole school came together to help Raegan because a team helped us exceed our goal. We were able to do much more than if I did this alone."

She also says she felt overwhelmed when she realized how much money they raised, and was amazed at how much the money could help with the bills and treatments.

Way to go Summer, and all of Lee Eaton’s student council! We’re proud to award you this week’s NewsDepth A Plus for rallying around your classmate and her cousin in need.
