WHILE THE STANDING ROCK SOUIX ARE CELEBRATING A VICTORY IN PROTECTING THEIR LAND, ACROSS THE COUNTRY THOSE IN TENNESSEE ARE MOURNING THE LOSS OF THEIRS. LAST WEEK, A WILDFIRE BURNED THROUGH ABOUT 15,000 ACRES AND 700 HOMES AND BUILDINGS THERE.
A WILDFIRE IS BIG DESTRUCTIVE FIRE THAT SPREADS RAPIDLY THROUGH A FOREST OR BRUSH LAND. IN THIS CASE VERY DRY TREES AND PLANTS FROM A DROUGHT ALLOWED FIRE TO SPREAD QUICKLY THROUGH THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK AND INTO SEVERAL TOWNS.

THE WILDFIRE WAS DEVASTATING, ESPECIALLY FOR THE POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATION OF GATILINBURG, BUT IT’S BEEN CONTAINED – AND RECOVERY EFFORTS ARE NOW UNDERWAY.
WHILE THE FIRE WAS STILL RAGING, THOUGH, THE FLAMES GREW SO LARGE THAT THEY COULD BE SEEN FROM SPACE. NASA RELEASED THIS IMAGE, TAKEN BY ITS AQUA SATELLITE, CAPTURING SEVERAL PLUMES OF SMOKE OVER TENNESSEE’S SMOKY MOUNTAINS.
