The grizzly bear population is making a comeback. The federal government wants to remove them from its list of endangered and threatened wildlife.
Yellowstone Park's grizzly population is more than five times what it was 40 years ago. That's when the bears were first put on the list. The endangered species act protected the grizzlies from being trapped or hunted in the area that spans across three states -- Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.
This area is home to as many as half of the estimated 1,400 to 1,700 grizzlies believed to exist in the lower 48 states. The proposed delisting would not apply to bear populations in other areas of the west that are under federal protection.
Officials say even if the bears are taken off the list, they plan on putting forth rules to help maintain their current population.
