When you think of January weather, you likely think of freezing temperatures and snow - like many of us saw earlier this week. So it was a surprise to see a rare January hurricane churning in the Atlantic.
The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Alex strengthened to a category one hurricane before weakening to a storm and making landfall in the Azores Islands. The hurricane season normally runs from June 1 to November 30.
Hurricane Alex is the first named storm of 2016 -- and it becomes just the fourth known storm to arrive in the first month of the year since forecasters began keeping track in 1851.
