The Black Dog: Why We Don't Care

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in four people will be affected by a mental illness or neurological disorder during their lifetime. Currently, more than 450 million people worldwide suffer from a mental illness, making it a  leading contributor to the global burden of disease.

Despite this, there is little action by global or national policy makers to implement the interventions which are known to help people recover.

Vikram Patel, Ph.D., international mental health advocate, the Pershing Square Professor of Global Health at Harvard University, and  one of the 2015 TIME 100, discusses how the global health community can address the stigma associated with mental illness.
