YWCA of Greater Cleveland shines light on gender violence in week of events

Gender violence is focus of YWCA activities

While men and women tend to be victims of violent crime at similar rates across the United States - the varying nature of those crimes and the lasting impacts affect women in a unique way.

For example, many instances of domestic violence against women go unreported.

Sexual assaults on women far outpace those on men.

Female homelessness is dramatically tied to domestic violence cases.

Food service and hospitality workers, occupations more often held by women - report high instances of sexual harassment.

To educate and help address these examples of gender-based violence - the YWCA of Greater Cleveland is organizing what they call a "Week Without Violence".

It's happening this week and there are events, lectures, and resources available to the public.

Today on the program we dig into how the YWCA is shining a light on gender based violence, and what support services they are offering.

The CEO of The YWCA of Greater Cleveland, Margaret Mitchell, is with us. Mitchell will also discuss her promotion to CEO of YWCA USA, and look back at her time in Cleveland.

Later in the hour, language barriers keeping citizens out of the voting process is the focus of a mayoral forum in the AsiaTown neighborhood.
We learn details with Joyce Huang, from MidTown Cleveland.
