"Beyond Ferguson"; Applause Performances; Host Transition

In times of political and social unrest, music often times becomes a refuge for all kinds of people, from those marching in the strees tto thos sitting alone at home craving solace on vinyl. For the artists who are creating it, music serves as a release and a way to communicate about the times we are in.It could be a form of protest, of solidarity, of griveing or of healing. The African American experience in this country has given birth to so many stirring pieces of music. Whether it's Billy Holiday lamenting the swaying bodies in "Strange Fruit", or Marvin Gaye seeking answers in "What's Goin' On?". You know, we've got to find a way, to bring some lovin' here to stay. Indeed. That tradition continues. Today, we'll get a first-hand look at how muscians, local and national, have been inspired to create as a response to the push for racial justice in recent weeks, prompted by the death on Memorial Day of George Floyd.First, we'll learn about a piece of music that incorporates a melody written by Michael Brown, an unarmed black man killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, and how that piece is inspiring young guitarists here in Cleveland. Later in the hour, we'll share a conversations between ideastream's Dan Poletta and two jazz musicians as they navigate racial unrest and an uncertain music industry. Finally, we end the show with an announcement about a transition in hosting duties. Mike McIntyre will be leaving the host chair on Mondays through Thursday, Rick Jackson taking over. Mike will move to host the Friday News Roundtable.
