Five days after the George Floyd protests in Downtown Cleveland, questions remain about what happened that day – and narratives are already being created.

Thousands attended a peaceful protest that started at Willard Park and marched through Downtown. But as the afternoon wore on, the situation devolved into a clash between police and demonstrators outside the Justice Center, and continued for hours.

ideastream reporter Jenny Hamel was there, conducting audio interviews for 90.3 WCPN’s airwaves. But she also captured what she saw with her iPhone.

This combination of her video and pictures takes you along on her journey Saturday, May 30 from Downtown until she left the Justice Center at roughly 6:30 p.m.

It is not meant to be a definitive record of the day’s events, but it is a ground-level view of what it was like to be there, from the vantage point of one reporter documenting Cleveland’s story that day.

Jenny Hamel is the host of the “Sound of Ideas.”
