Flooding caused by sustained heavy rains at Grandpa's Cheese Barn and Sweetie's Chocolates in Ashland, OH,

Good morning, iOpeners. It's Monday, June 17, 2019.

Did a tornado touch down in southeastern Cuyahoga County on Sunday? The National Weather Service in Cleveland said it received numerous reports of damage spreading from there to Warren, in Trumbull County.  It said it's sending out storm damage survey teams today.

Mother Nature is making more headlines this morning.  The National Weather Service warns of widespread fog developing from north central Ohio into northwest Pennsylvania. Visibilities will drop to a quarter of a mile or less at times. Meteorologists also have southern Medina and Summit counties and northern Ashland County under a flash flood warning until 9:45 a.m.  Thunderstorms with heavy rain were in the warned area around 4 a.m.  The National Weather Service says an inch of rain has already fallen, increasing the potential for flash floods. Flooding caused Grandpa’s Cheesebarn and Sweeties Chocolates to close Sunday. Pictures posted to the business’s Facebook page showed their parking lot and property awash in brown, muddy water.

In Lorain, police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy early Sunday. Officers responded to a call of shots fired at a home on Vine Avenue around 4:30 a.m. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.  Lorain detectives say the teen was apparently shot following a disagreement at a party at a nearby residence.

Ohio’s two historically black colleges are merging some of their operations, as both struggle with financial problems and accreditation issues.  Wilberforce University and Central State University will merge information technology, their libraries, and their housing and food services. The colleges are located near each other about an hour southwest of Columbus.

Trevor Bauer had the first shutout of his Major League career, leading the Indians to an 8-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers and a sweep of their three-game series. He gave up four hits, struck out eight and walked none in his third career complete game.

Wea ther forecast: Patchy fog this morning.  Slight chance of showers this afternoon. Otherwise, cloudy, high 70. Tonight, patchy fog around midnight.  Cloudy later. Low 61.  Tomorrow, partly sunny, high 71.
