The iOpener: Rep. Tim Ryan Holds Presidential Rally In Youngstown; Deadly Crashes On Sunday

Good morning, iOpeners. It's Monday, April 8, 2019.  It's the start of another week. We hope that you had a good weekend. 

Rep. Tim Ryan kicked off his presidential campaign locally with a campaign rally in downtown Youngstown. The Democrat was joined by the majors of Youngstown, Warren and Akron. He spoke for about a half hour and said the he wanted to bring the country together. WKSU's Kabir Bhatia looks at what it will take for him to break through the crowded field of Democrats who want to take on President Trump. 

The Euclid Fire Department has confirmed one man died in a house fire on E. 194th St. early Monday morning. Firefighters said the fire was out by 7 a.m. but with heavy damage and a partial collapse of the living room floor . Firefighters arrived around 4:30 Monday morning and pulled the unidentified man out of a second story window. Witnesses told reporters an elderly man lived alone at the home.

Two Cleveland police officers were taken to the hospital after suffering injuries during a foot chase Sunday night, one officer with a possible concussion and one with a separated shoulder. Two suspects in a car theft were caught near Euclid Avenue and Torbenson Drive.

The State Highway Patrol says a series of crashes on I-90 early Sunday left one person dead and injured several others.  Authorities say 50-year-old James Blankenship of Willowick was killed and his 26-year-old son was seriously injured by a car that drifted onto the berm. The two were loading a damaged vehicle onto a trailer. Authorities say another vehicle then rear-ended a Bratenahl police cruiser at the crash site; the officer was treated and released. Alcohol or drugs are believed to be a factor in both crashes.

Ohio and Hungary have struck up a partnership aimed at strengthening economic, technological and commercial cooperation. Ohio Development Services Director Lydia Mihalik and Hungary's minister of foreign affairs and trade, H.E. Péter Szijjártó recently signed a memorandum of understanding. The document pledges broader economic cooperation between the parties. Mihalik said the partnership goes beyond trade, which totaled $186 million last year, to shared ideas. Szijjártó said American investors are increasingly important in Hungary's small but "very open" economy. The leaders say 25 years of cooperation between the Ohio National Guard and the Hungarian Defense Forces laid the groundwork for the deal. Cleveland is home to one of the largest Hungarian populations in the U.S.   

Before the Cavs loss to San Antonio Sunday, Coach Larry Drew said he has not spoken with the club's front office about his future with the team. Drew took over after six games for Ty Lue and the young Cavs showed improvement in the second half of the season. The season finale is tomorrow, If the Cavaliers choose not to retain him, Drew will receive a buyout payment.

The Indians swept a four game series from the Blue Jays after a 3-1 win Sunday. Mike Clevinger left the game after 5 shutout innings with upper back tightness, but it's believed he'll make his next start. The Tribe has the day off before a series in Detroit. 

Weather: Mostly cloudy today and warm with a high of 70. It will be coooler tonight, partly cloudy low 49.  Cooler tomorrow as well although mostly sunny tomorrow with a high of 57. A chance of showers tomorrow night, low 37.
