NPR's Scott Simon reflects on the books and career of British author Graham Greene, born Oct. 2, 1904, in Berkhamsted, England. Greene was best known for his well-crafted, realistic spy thrillers, set in exotic locales.

Included among his most popular books are The Third Man and The Quiet American, which was recently re-released and made into a film.
