The Ohio Department of Education today released preliminary results from last spring’s PARCC tests.
Some 15,000 Cleveland public school third through eighth graders took the PARCC math test last spring and third graders did the best. 37 percent scored proficient or above compared to 21 percent of eighth graders. Fourth through tenth graders took the English Language Arts tests and C-M-S-D ninth graders had the lowest passage rate with just over a third scoring proficient or better.
Among third graders in Cuyahoga County, Solon City Schools did best in math with nearly 99% scoring profient or better. And Indepence school fourth graders beat out their peers in the county with nearly 99% passing the English Lanuage Arts test.
It's unclear how the scores compare to last year since this was the first time Ohio students took the Common-Core aligned tests created by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness and Careers. It’s also the last. This summer the state legislature decided to switch from PARCC to AIR tests designed by the American Institutes for Research.
As a result the legislature is also granting “safe harbor” from the PARCC tests, meaning the scores won’t count against students or teachers.
The preliminary results are broken down by school district. Test results for individual schools will be released in January. School report cards are also expected early next year.
