A legislative committee, the State Controlling Board, has given final approval to a series of grants to several Ohio colleges. That money will be matched by money from prospective employers to pay the students for their work. Jeff Robinson speaks for the Ohio Board of Regents, which oversees the internship program. He talked about its impact with Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.
The government share of this internship money originates from licensing fees, paid by Ohio’s four new gambling casinos. When voters OKed the casino ballot issue in 2009, the measure declared that licensing fee money would be channeled into workforce development programs. State legislators later declared that internship programs at universities would fit into that category.
