Cleveland Schools to Get millions in Stimulus Dollars

Sanders got the news during a meeting in Washington D.C. between U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and school leaders from other large systems including Chicago, Pittsburgh and Detroit.

SANDERS: "We have targeted at this point about $92 million dollars. We will likely begin to see those funds as early as the next 30 days.

The money is separate from federal funds that are part the state's education budget. However, Sanders says the amount of funding targeted for Cleveland in that budget appears to be enough to save the district from 900 layoffs threatened in an earlier worst-case scenario.

SANDERS: "We have to proceed at this point, based on the fact that the money will come from the governor."

Sanders says he does not believe Governor Ted Strickland will cut funds to Cleveland schools, as was widely reported over the weekend.
